Akhil Das, MD is a HS Clinical Professor at UCI Health Department of Urology. He specializes in minimally invasive treatments for BPH and endoscopic laser surgery, as well as management of lower urinary tract dysfunction including urinary incontinence in both males and females.
He recently served as Professor of Urology in the Department of Urology at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. Prior to this appointment, he was on the faculty at New York Medical College and later went on to private practice in New Mexico where he continued to improve on the techniques of HoLEP. He graduated from Hahnemann University School of Medicine and completed his urology residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. He continued his post graduate training with a fellowship at Tauranga Hospital in New Zealand under the mentorship of Dr. Peter Gilling, the founder of Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP) technique.
Dr. Das is one of the first surgeons to perform HoLEP in the USA and having helped develop the surgical strategies to perform HoLEP as a minimally invasive technique for BPH.
He was instrumental in making HoLEP as procedure of choice for BPH and helped to establish the CPT code for HoLEP. In the revised 2018 AUA Guidelines for BPH, HoLEP is now considered the primary endoscopic surgical technique that is independent of prostate size, and arguably the gold standard for the surgical management of BPH.
